Local Edinburgh amateur theatre company Allegro take on The SpongeBob musical as their 2024 show, and it’s
Swashbuckling is completely bonkers and family fun. Allegro has a reputation for putting on Productions of professional standard as an amateur theatre company, and this show is no exception. With high energy choreography, clever and visually captivating staging, and a cast full to the brim with talent.
Based on the family favourite cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants, the SpongeBob musical is set in a bikini bottom and follows all your favourite characters on an adventure to save their home. Featuring a fun soundtrack and colourful and vibrant costumes, the well-loved cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants is brought to life on stage.
As audiences step into the Church Hill theatre, they are instantly immersed in the enchanting world of Bikini Bottom. The auditorium is adorned with thematic decorations, while dynamic lighting and engaging graphics grace the on-stage screen, setting an inviting atmosphere even before the curtain rises. The production creatively integrates this screen element, using animations to provide a captivating backdrop that enhances the storytelling, freeing up physical space for a large ensemble cast to showcase their talents. This innovative use of technology allows for imaginative choreography and staging, making the performance all the more captivating.
My choreography and staging Highlights included “(Just a)simple Sponge” In particular I loved the use of neon and props, “hero is my middle name” the use of umbrellas as jellyfish and costumes in this number along with the choreography make this a visual feast for your eyes and “I’m not a loser” a fun tap number that has you tapping along in your seat.
The ensemble is packed with talent and infectious energy that shines when they perform all together on stage. Led by Joe Puroell As “Spongebob”, Stuart Williamson as “Patrick Star”, Coast Kinloch as “Sandy Cheeks” Harrison Owens as “Squidward”, Russell Coid as “Mr Krabs”, Rosie Sugrue as “Pearl”, Robbie Noble as “Plankton” and Anna Spence as “Karen the computer”.
Joe Puroell’s portrayal of “SpongeBob” is a whirlwind of joy, radiating infectious charm and showcasing impressive vocal prowess. Coast Kinloch shines as “Sandy,” delivering a dazzling, witty performance buoyed by astounding vocals and high-energy choreography that captivates the audience.
Robbie Noble and Anna Spence make an unforgettable villainous duo as “Plankton” and “Karen,” bringing laugh-out-loud comedic timing and vibrant chemistry to the stage. Their interplay adds an extra layer of enjoyment, ensuring that their performances are a highlight of the show.
