“There’s No Place Like Home”
The Lyceum Edinburgh brought the world premiere of Wild Rose: The Musical to a triumphant close this weekend, with sold-out performances that perfectly capped an exceptional run. This country music-infused production captures both the heart and soul of Glasgow and Nashville in equal measure.
A Scottish Story with Nashville Dreams
Wild Rose follows the journey of Rose-Lynn, a talented country singer from Glasgow who finds herself navigating life after prison while pursuing her musical aspirations in Nashville. The narrative strikes a delicate balance between ambition and reality, family obligations and personal dreams.
The jukebox musical features beloved country hits from icons like Carrie Underwood and Dolly Parton, alongside the poignant original song from the film, “Glasgow (There’s No Place Like Home).” Each musical number drives the emotional core of the story forward with authentic country spirit.
A Powerhouse Performance
Dawn Sievewright delivers an extraordinary performance as Rose-Lynn, bringing grit, vulnerability, and undeniable talent to the role. Her vocal prowess and stamina are remarkable, but it’s the honesty in her portrayal that makes Rose-Lynn so deeply relatable despite her flaws. Sievewright embodies the character’s rough edges and tender heart with equal conviction.
Scottish Humor Meets Universal Themes
The production excels in its use of distinctly Scottish humor while exploring universal themes of family, sacrifice, and following one’s passion. The character arcs feel genuine and accessible, allowing audiences to connect with Rose-Lynn’s struggles and triumphs regardless of their familiarity with Glasgow or country music.
The Band Takes Center Stage
In a brilliant production choice, the band remains onstage throughout the show, functioning as the in-universe house band. This integration creates an immersive concert-like atmosphere at key moments. A standout scene occurs in the first act when Rose-Lynn introduces each band member individually, allowing these talented musicians their well-deserved moment in the spotlight.
A Cohesive Ensemble
The entire cast brings tremendous energy and commitment to their roles, creating a cohesive ensemble that elevates the production. From intimate family scenes to rousing musical numbers, the chemistry between performers strengthens the emotional impact of Rose-Lynn’s journey.

Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
Wild Rose: The Musical delivers a perfect blend of Scottish charm and country soul. With its stellar performances, heartfelt storytelling, and vibrant music, this production proves itself worthy of its sold-out status and standing ovations.
