Last night I headed along to the Edinburgh Playhouse with my grandma to see High Society, and as two lovers of old classic musicals, this one felt like a proper treat. There’s something special about sharing a show rooted in nostalgia with someone who lived through the era it celebrates — and this production leans into that golden‑age glamour with full force.
This stage adaptation of the 1950s movie musical brings Hollywood charm to life, led by Helen George and Julian Ovenden, who glide through the story with the elegance of true old‑school movie stars. George’s Tracy is poised, radiant, and effortlessly charismatic, while Ovenden’s Dex has that smooth, debonair quality that makes you feel like you’ve stepped straight into a vintage MGM reel.
Freddie Fox shines as undercover reporter Mike Connor — charming, sharp, and wonderfully smooth. His chemistry with both Tracy and Liz is infectious, adding a joyful spark to every scene he’s in.
Nigel Lindsay, meanwhile, is hilarious as Uncle Willie, delivering a performance full of cheeky humour and polished showmanship that had the audience laughing throughout.
Visually, the production is gorgeous. The costumes are glamorous and era‑perfect, the set design evokes the sophistication of high society living, and the dancing and musical numbers bring the classic film to life with vibrant energy. It’s a feast for fans of vintage musicals — all sparkle, style, and nostalgia.
Where the show falters slightly is in its story. It’s not the most original narrative, and at times it feels a little thin compared to the spectacle surrounding it. But honestly? The performances, the design, and the sheer charm of the production more than make up for it. High Society delivers an enjoyable night at the theatre, full of glamour, humour, and old Hollywood magic.
A swell party, indeed.
